Raleigh DMV Driver’s License Points
DMV Points Wake County
In Raleigh, Wake County, and the rest of North Carolina, there are two types of points that can accrue to drivers who have received a traffic ticket. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Points System is used by the state to evaluate a driver’s eligibility to hold a license (and thus, eligibility to drive). The number of DMV points given out for a traffic ticket in Raleigh depends on the severity of the offense (see table below) and the legal steps an individual takes to address the offense. Accruing too many points can lead to the revocation of an individual’s driver’s license.
A Raleigh driver who does not have a a prior revocation during the 3 years prior usually remains eligible to drive unless they receive 12 DMV points in a rolling 3-year period called an “experience period.” After 12 points, the license can be suspended. Drivers with prior revocations can be suspended after receiving 8 DMV points. If a license is revoked, all points on that license are removed and set back to zero.
